Recruiting Timeline
The college recruiting process is a multi-year journey. While every athlete’s path is different, the following timeline provides general guidance on how players can prepare and position themselves for opportunities to play field hockey at the collegiate level.
7th–8th Grade (Early Development)
Focus: Skill development and love of the game
- Build strong fundamentals and game awareness
- Begin playing in competitive environments
- Attend camps and clinics to gain experience
- Watch college games and learn about different programs
At this stage, development is the priority—focus on improving skills and enjoying the game.
9th Grade (Freshman Year)
Focus: Introduction to recruiting exposure
- Compete in tournaments where college coaches may be present
- Begin identifying potential schools of interest
- Create a basic player profile (position, grad year, stats)
- Continue developing technical and tactical skills
Start becoming familiar with the recruiting process while continuing to develop as a player.
10th Grade (Sophomore Year)
Focus: Building Visibility
- Attend recruiting showcases and major tournaments
- Begin creating a highlight video
- Start reaching out to college coaches via email
- Attend college prospect camps
This is a key time to start gaining exposure and building connections.
11th Grade (Junior Year)
Focus: Active recruiting phase
- Communicate regularly with college coaches
- Update and share highlight videos
- Attend college clinics and prospect days
- Narrow down your list of target schools
- Take unofficial and official visits
This is the most important recruiting year for most athletes.
12th Grade (Senior Year)
Focus: Commitment and final decisions
- Finalize communication with coaches
- Make your college commitment decision
- Continue competing and developing
- Prepare for the transition to collegiate athletics
